HEE Integrated Pre-Registration Trainee Pharmacy Technician Programme (IPTPT)

Programme Introduction

Following on from the National Pilot, PWDS are pleased to continue to support the HEE Integrated Pre-Registration Trainee Pharmacy Technician (PTPT) programme. PTPTs are trained across sectors and complete a GPhC recognised 2-year training programme. This qualification combined with the work experience will enable registration as a pharmacy technician with the GPhC.

The Integrated model facilitates the training of PTPTs across sectors in a dual or tri-partnership model.

This programme will create structured training, offering a minimum of 12 weeks’ experience in a minimum of two of the following healthcare settings:

  • Secondary care
  • Community mental health
  • Community pharmacy
  • General practice
  • Care homes

Entry Criteria

The following prerequistes must be met before application

Applicants will require at least 4 GCSEs (grade A*-C), including English, maths and two sciences or equivalent qualifications

Programme Features

Employers from community pharmacy, general practice, care homes, secondary care and community mental health have formed partnerships and recruited pre-registration trainees for a 24-month period, with the lead employer responsible for employing the trainees.

These trainees are additional to the existing pipeline and aims to support future workforce needs in new and expanding roles, such as primary care.

Trainees will benefit from quality further and higher education and training, in line with the General Pharmaceutical Council’s (GPhC) Initial Education and Training Standards (IETs).

Programme Details

There are significant benefits of the integrated training model for all, including:

  • Contribution to the development of a flexible pharmacy technician workforce, better prepared to deliver enhanced integrated cross-sector healthcare system services for patients and the public
  • Equipping pre-registration pharmacy technicians with a broader skillset, allowing them to better support service delivery to patients and the public across all healthcare systems
  • Improved understanding of the transfer of care issues and how to support patients as they transition between care settings
  • Enhanced relationships between partners supporting the development of primary care networks and integrated care systems
  • Increased awareness of barriers and difficulties with communication and transfer of care and how to resolve them
  • Although PTPTs will be supernumerary, they will support service delivery.

Support for the trainees

All trainees have an educational supervisor who will oversee the training programme and practice/clinical supervisors in each rotation.

HEE have also provided a Regional Facilitator to offer ongoing support and guidance for all involved in the programme.

Following on from the pilot cohort, Victoria Horton is the Regional Facilitator for the South cohort and can be contacted at victoria.horton@hee.nhs.uk

Method of Delivery

The two-year programme will be delivered via virtual classroom/e-learning and/or face-to-face study days.
