Introduction

Some HEE South training sites offer summer placement experience in their pharmacies.

The experience can provide an insight into that area of pharmacy practice and can help to achieve specific objectives to support your decision where to undertake your foundation pharmacy training.

Buckinghamshire Healthcare will be offering two placements week commencing 18th July for one week. This placement will provide you with an introduction to working in hospital pharmacy.  You will spend time with pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and Foundation trainee pharmacist to gain insight into the foundation year and working as a hospital pharmacist.  The placements includes time on the wards, dispensary and other departments if available.  Placements are based across Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust at Stoke Mandeville, Aylesbury and Wycombe Hospital, High Wycombe. Applicant should be second or third year pharmacy undergraduates.  No accommodation is available and no payment is available for these one week clinical placements.  We do often have technical opportunities in dispensary / stores in holidays so please contact Alexa Conrad if that is something you would be interested in. Our Dorset is a partnership of health and social care organisations working together to deliver care for patients across healthcare organisations in Dorset. This means we’re at the forefront of innovative working and shaping how pharmacy will work in the future.

The summer placement will consist of two weeks unpaid. You will have the opportunity to experience the first class care and services through experiencing the varied roles across the different healthcare providers. You will undertake a project during your placement and this will form part of the Our Dorset summer placement showcase day.

This summer placement gives you the opportunity to enjoy all that Dorset has to offer. Bournemouth is a vibrant university town with stunning beaches, a wide selection of sports and entertainment and venues to eat and drink; and Poole has a large natural harbour and is perfect for water sports or relaxing at a quayside restaurant.

With both the New Forest and Isle of Purbeck on our doorstep, over 7 miles of stunning sandy beaches and coastal paths, we are located within an area of amazing beauty providing a great place for you to achieve your rewarding work life balance.

We offer a two-week summer placement to TWO 3rd year pharmacy undergraduates over the summer months, between June and August each year, to applicants wishing to attain experience in the hospital sector.

During the summer placement you will have the opportunity to:

  • rotate through different areas within the pharmacy dispensary including inpatients and outpatients
  • partake in the dispensing of inpatient and outpatient prescriptions, and the supply of controlled drugs
  • screen various prescriptions under supervision of the pharmacist both in the dispensary and on the ward
  • visit the ward with a medicine management technician and partake in the medicine’s reconciliation process
  • visit different clinical wards with a pharmacist and review drug charts, discuss various patient cases and propose potential interventions to optimise patient care
  • gain an understanding of the MDT team

Week long placements are available at both Cheltenham General and Gloucester Royal Hospitals. Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (GHNHSFT) is one of the largest hospital trusts in the country and provides high quality acute elective and specialist care for a population of more than 612,000 people.  With 960 beds, over 125,000 emergency attendances and nearly 800,000 outpatient appointments each year, we provide high quality acute elective and specialist services under our vision of ‘Best Care For Everyone’.  GHNHSFT offers two training sites located at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital (GRH) and Cheltenham General Hospital (CGH).  Our hospitals are district general hospitals with a great tradition of providing high quality hospital services; some specialist departments are concentrated at either Cheltenham General (oncology and vascular surgery) or Gloucestershire Royal hospitals (renal and stroke medicine and paediatrics). See GHNSHFT website: http://www.gloshospitals.nhs.uk .Whilst on placement at GHNHSFT you’ll spend time in departments such as: dispensary, medicines information and aseptic services.  You’ll spend time with a range of pharmacy technicians and pharmacists to see different wards and specialities within the hospital.  Whilst on placement with us you may be able to complete an audit. One- or two-week placements are available depending on dates and availability between June and September. Successful applicants will cover a variety of areas within our pharmacy department across our sites (Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital and The Royal Hampshire County Hospital). These include: inpatient and outpatient dispensaries, medicines management, aseptics, surgical, medical and acute clinical pharmacy, pseudomyxoma, medicines information, pharmacy governance, antimicrobials, stores and distribution. Applications are welcome from all Mpharm students, but 3rd Year students will be prioritised. Ability to travel between the sites will be required, access to a car would be beneficial but we do have internal transport and both sites are easily accessed by public transport.   The applicant would be expected to organise accommodation themselves if needed. These 16 paid 5 week summer placements in General Practice (GP) are an opportunity for 3rd year MPharm students to increase your awareness of primary care careers, increase your understanding of the role of clinical pharmacists in GP and community, increase your understanding of cross-sector and MDT working, have an opportunity to develop your skills and knowledge and increase your understanding of foundation placement opportunities in GP and community in the South West. Successful students will attend an online induction day and wrap-up event with the HEE South GP FtP Team where they will deliver a presentation of a completed audit project.

Summer placements in North Bristol are an opportunity to gain knowledge and experience of what the role of a hospital pharmacist entails. Experience various specialist areas, spend time with current foundation trainee pharmacists and visit wards. There is an opportunity to gain audit experience. Applicants require good communication skills, should be enthusiastic, proactive, hardworking, accurate, methodical and trustworthy. Students must have the ability to work as part of a team and also use own initiative as part of the defined role. There is hospital accommodation available for these unpaid placements (also plenty of rooms or properties to let close to the hospitals).

Oxford University Hospitals is a centre of clinical excellence and one of the largest NHS teaching trusts in the UK. The Trust consists of four hospitals providing a range of clinical services, training, and research.

We are offering 1-week, unpaid summer placements, on the following weeks:

  • 2 places week commencing 27th June
  • 2 places week commencing 4th July

Students will spend time with clinical pharmacists and current trainee pharmacists on the wards throughout the John Radcliffe, Nuffield Orthopaedic and Churchill hospitals. Here you can observe the pharmacists working in the multidisciplinary team and their contributions to patients care. You may have an opportunity to conduct medicines reconciliations or counselling under supervision. You will also experience some of our pharmacy services such as our dispensary, medicines information and clinical trials. Your placement will be supplemented by a workbook.

The Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest District General Hospitals in the country. It was the first Foundation Trust in the South Central Strategic Health Authority. The Trust has a successful track record of delivering high quality acute medical and surgical services for 500,000 patients across West Berkshire, an area extending from Newbury in the west to Henley-on-Thames in the east, and including Wokingham and parts of Hampshire to the south and parts of Oxfordshire to the north. The Trust is offering a couple of one-week placements from 4th of July 2022 to 8th of July 2022 and from 11th of July 2022 to 15th of July 2022. These placements will provide an insight into hospital pharmacy as you will experience working alongside technicians, pharmacists and foundation trainee pharmacists. During the placement, some of the clinical rotations you will visit include cardiology, respiratory, acute medical unit (AMU), surgery and elderly care. Also, you will spend time in dispensary, stores, QA department, clinical trials and aseptics.  We are looking for third year pharmacy students only. The applicant would be expected to organise accommodation themselves if needed. Please note these placements are vocational and thus are unpaid.

Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust and Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust will be offering 4 unpaid summer placements this year, each a week long in either June or July 2022.

The placements are open to 3rd year MPharm students only.

As well as understanding how medicines is supplied to inpatients, students will shadow a variety of clinical pharmacists through orthopaedics, surgery, medicine, paediatrics, mental health, care of the elderly,  technical services and cancer. Students will have the opportunity to conduct an audit or QI project under supervision.

You will be placed in a variety of sites across the county, so having access to a car is advantageous.

Placements at RD&E will last 1 week and take place throughout July. Further information regarding start dates will be given to successful applicants. The Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust is an 800-bed teaching hospital with a pharmacy department of around 145 staff.  The pharmacy department has a partnership with Boots who provide outpatient pharmacy services within the Trust.  We also have an onsite technical services unit. During the placement you will have opportunities to explore different areas of our department including the dispensary, distribution, aseptic services as well as experiencing accompanied ward visits with clinical pharmacists and medicines management pharmacy technicians. Placements are open to students who will have completed their third year of the Mpharm course by the summer. Hospital accommodation may be available on request. Details of accommodation will be given to successful applicants. This is an unpaid placement. Placements will be at the Pharmacy department, RUH Bath NHS Foundation Trust. Mornings, we will invest in you shadowing members of the pharmacy team to gain an insight into the roles of the pharmacy team within the NHS trust. Afternoons you will be required to undertake a project for the chief pharmacist. Applicants must be currently studying for an M.Pharm degree with the intention of completing GPhC registration. Summer Vacation Placements available to 4 students for 2-week placements in June. You will spend one week at the RUH, Bath, two days learning about the work of BSW CCG and 3 days in a GP practice with BEMS. All placement locations will be in the Bath locality. This placement gives you an exciting and invaluable opportunity to experience and fully understand the patient journey through primary and secondary care. You will shadow clinical pharmacists in the hospital and GP setting but you will also gain an insight into the role that pharmacists have in CCGs. Ability to drive to sites would be beneficial but is not essential. Applications are welcome from all MPharm students but we will preference students in MPharm 3. No accommodation is available and no payments are available, these are voluntary placements. The placements will be advertised on the NHS jobs website in March/April.

Placements will be at the pharmacy department at Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust. A comprehensive programme covering all aspects of hospital pharmacy, the student will spend time on the wards with pharmacists and medicine management pharmacy technicians observing them carrying out various tasks like medicine optimisation, drug histories, patient consultation and counselling. They will also spend time in some of our other support services, including aseptics, procurement, dispensary, homecare and clinical trials. A workbook will be provided for them to use during their placement, to consolidate their learning and ensure they get the most out of their placement with us. Applicants must be third year MPharm students. On-site accommodation MAY be available and the trust may contribute half towards the cost if accommodation is on site but note due to COVID restrictions on site accommodation is not always guaranteed. We can offer a flexible 2 to 5 day programme to 3rd year undergraduates during June and July 2022. We are looking for candidates who are interested in the Torbay area and gaining hospital practice experience. We will deliver a quality overview of the services provided by the whole pharmacy team. This will include ward visits accompanied by either a pharmacist and/or a pharmacy technician; dispensary; distribution; aseptic services; and medicines information. Applicants will be able to meet with our current foundation trainee pharmacists to discuss how we support and provide them with learning opportunities during their foundation training year. Weston General Hospital is a small district general hospital within University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust and is located in Weston-super-Mare. We offer one weeks work experience shadowing pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and other pharmacy staff performing medicines reconciliation, clinical duties and dispensing and supply services. Hospital accommodation may be available for these unpaid placements (there are also plenty of hotels and B&Bs in the town). Our trust provides tertiary and national speciality services such as paediatrics, cardiac surgery, oncology and bone marrow transplantation as well as acute services for the Bristol area. We are also a NHS Global Digital Exemplar site. Each placement will see the student accompanying pharmacy department staff members across different clinical specialities at ward/clinic level as well different sections of the department whether it is ward stock supplies, dispensary, aseptic services, radiopharmacy or medicines information. Supervising staff members may be pharmacy assistants, informatics specialists, pharmacy technicians, clinical pharmacists or prescribing pharmacists. There is no hospital accommodation for these unpaid placements. Applicants should be punctual, organised and able to start and finish a given task within an appropriate time frame.
