Programme Introduction

This training programme is a competency-based framework designed specifically to meet the training and learning needs of pharmacy technicians working in specialist medicines information and advice roles.

This enquiry type will enable learners to develop competency in answering queries such as:

  • Checking compatibility of medicines in a syringe driver
  • Checking diluents and strengths of medicines in a syringe driver
  • Checking whether medicines are suitable to be administered by a syringe driver

Programme Description

Aims and Learning Outcomes

The aim of the programme is to prepare learners for an expanded medicines information role by enabling learners to:

  • Describe standard search patterns specific to enquiry types, and understand their usefulness in effective answering of medicines information enquiries.
  • Understand the benefits and limitations of individual medicines information reference sources and enable learners to access relevant information from appropriate sources.
  • Understand how to answer enquiries to provide medicines advice using a patient-centred approach.
  • Develop skills of professional judgement.

 

These learning objectives must then be put into practice and evidenced through the learner’s e-portfolio.

Method of Delivery

  • Resources provided to support self-directed learning
  • Local policy and procedures relating to scope of practice
  • Training Programme Provider support sessions

Method of Assessment

  • Work-based evidence collection and e-portfolio building
  • Local assessment in practice, by an educational supervisor or mentor
  • PWDS assessment of e-portfolio and certification
