Scope of Practice for Newly Qualified Pharmacist Prescribers in Secondary Care – Recommendations and Principles
In 2021, the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) introduced new standards for the initial education and training of pharmacists (IETS), requiring all pharmacists to qualify as independent prescribers at the point of registration. This represents a significant change for the profession, as newly qualified pharmacist prescribers will enter practice without the post-registration consolidation traditionally associated with independent prescribing. The above document sets out recommendations and principles to support safe, effective prescribing practice in secondary care, recognising the need for defined scope, supervision, and structured development as newly qualified pharmacists build experience and competence.
