APTUK Position Statement on Final Accuracy Checking and Medicines Optimisation Skills

The Association of Pharmacy Technicians UK (APTUK) have recently published a position statement relating to pharmacy technicians undertaking final accuracy checking of dispensed medicines and products, and medicines optimisation underpinning knowledge and skills assessment within their pre-registration training.

The position statement provides information and guidance around the safe deployment of final accuracy checking and medicines optimisation skills post-qualification, following the changes to qualifications and courses in line with the 2017 General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) initial education and training standards for Pharmacy Technicians (IETs).

The position statement aims to provide employers with information about the changes around the new pharmacy technician skill set in view of the revised IETs and provide reassurance and guidance around the safe deployment of these skills in practice post-registration.

PWDS support this position statement and believe it provides appropriate guidance for employers of pharmacy technicians across our geography and will adopt the guidance included in our messaging around this issue. As always, we are always happy to support our employers with queries and questions around individual cases which fall outside of the APTUK position statement.

The position statement can be accessed here
