Programme Introduction

Managing Pharmaceutical Stock is one unit of the Pearson BTEC Level 2 Certificate in the Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Support Staff.

This nationally recognised, credit-bearing qualification was developed to allow Pharmacy Support Staff to achieve the GPhC Education and Training requirements.

Registering for this unit will give you registration onto the complete Pearson BTEC Level 2 Certificate in the Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Support Staff.

This allows you the option of gaining one certificate of unit credit for this unit or to undertake additional units as required for your role, ultimately building credit up to a complete Level 2 certificate.

Unit 6: Managing Pharmaceutical Stock

PWDS is offering Unit 6 as a standalone unit for pharmacy support staff working in a managing stock role for whom completion of the whole qualification is inappropriate. Learners will gain the knowledge and skills required to manage pharmaceutical stock effectively. The unit covers the ordering and receipt of stock as well as the maintenance, safe storage and issuing of stock.

Entry Criteria

The following prerequistes must be met before application

The learner must meet the following entry criteria:

  • Be working in an appropriate role relating to the management of stock
  • Have the recommendation and support of the Chief Pharmacist or designated deputy
  • Have a protected weekly study morning for the duration of the course
  • Be able to attend virtual classrooms via Teams- with a camera and microphone
  • Have a qualified assessor based within the learner’s trust who is occupational competent to undertake work-based observations

Programme Features

This programme is for Pharmacy Support Staff working/ rotating into a stock management environment

The programme comprises of:

  • Virtual classrooms delivered via Teams
  • Self-directed learning- completion of workbook activities relating to teaching sessions- regionally assessed
  • Completion of assignments- regionally assessed
  • In-house observations of practice
  • Regional Assessment of e-portfolio.
  • Credit bearing, nationally recognised certificate upon successful unit completion

Programme cost includes:

  • Pearson registration and certification costs
  • e-Portfolio license
  • Virtual classrooms
  • Work-based training materials including workbooks, assignments etc.
  • Regional assessor/tutor to provide virtual classrooms, tutorials, assess assignments
  • Training provider final assessment of evidence in the e-portfolio

Learners and work-based assessors are also able to access ongoing programme support by a PWDS assessor.

Programme Description

The programme has been designed to facilitate the development of pharmacy support staff working in a managing stock role. It allows them to gain a certificate of unit credit and to meet the GPhC education and training requirements.

Method of Delivery

The qualification will be delivered using a blended learning approach. Taught sessions will be delivered via Teams, accompanied by workbooks etc. for self-directed learning within the workplace. An e-portfolio will be used for the collection of evidence including assignments and workplace observations of practice. Regular drop in tutorials will also be held by unit assessors.

Method of Assessment

Evidence collection in the form of workbooks, assignments and competency-based assessments. In house observations of practice undertaken by work-based assessor. All evidence is assessed by the regional unit assessor.
