Programme Introduction

The PWDS Final Accuracy Checking Programme (FACP) for Pharmacy Technicians and Pharmacy Support Staff, has been developed in line with the Nationally Recognised Education Framework for Final Accuracy Checking of Dispensed Medicines and Products to provide the training and assessment of pharmacy technicians and pharmacy support staff who have been delegated the task of the final accuracy check of dispensed items under the supervision of a pharmacist.

This education and training programme has been formally approved by APTUK demonstrating it meets the standards of the recognised APTUK National Education Framework for Final Accuracy Checking of Dispensed Medicines and Products

 

Entry Criteria

The following prerequistes must be met before application

The following entry requirements are to ensure that trainee final accuracy checker has sufficient experience and has developed attributes and attitudes to accept responsibility of the role.

Before entry onto the programme, pharmacy technician applicants need to meet the following entry criteria:

  • Be a registered pharmacy professional with the General Pharmaceutical Council (or a qualified pharmacy technician in Northern Ireland) or is working towards a GPhC approved pre-registration trainee programme.: www.pharmacyregulation.org
  • Nomination from their chief pharmacist or superintendent pharmacist (or designated deputy) to confirm that they are a suitable person for the role
  • Demonstration of qualities and behaviours that are necessary to perform the ACPT role, including professionalism, accountability, accuracy, and effective communication skills
  • Demonstration of a good working knowledge of local SOPs, 6 months dispensing experience in current dispensary within the past 12 months under the supervision, direction, or guidance of a pharmacy professional to whom they have been directly accountable, prior to commencing the training programme
  • An allocated educational supervisor based within the trainee’s Trust/organisation who is an appropriately experienced pharmacist or an accredited ACPT or has equivalent experience at the practice base to be acknowledged as occupationally competent
  • Certificate of completion of the PWDS Dispensing Accuracy Assessment NB: There should be no more than three attempts at any one time in completing the dispensing accuracy logs. If unsuccessful on the third attempt, then a period of reflection and dispensing re-training should be completed (according to local SOPs and risk management strategies) before undertaking the dispensing accuracy assessment again.

 

Before entry onto the programme, pharmacy support staff applicants need to meet the following entry criteria:

  • Nomination from their chief pharmacist or superintendent pharmacist (or designated deputy) to confirm that they are a suitable person for the role
  • Demonstration of qualities and behaviours that are necessary to perform the ACPSS role, including professionalism, accountability, accuracy, and effective communication skills
  • Demonstration of a good working knowledge of local SOPs, two years dispensing experience, at least 6 months in current dispensary within the past 12 months under the supervision, direction, or guidance of a pharmacy professional to whom they have been directly accountable, prior to commencing the training programme
  • An allocated educational supervisor based within the trainee’s Trust/organisation who is an appropriately experienced pharmacist or an accredited ACPT or has equivalent experience at the practice base to be acknowledged as occupationally competent
  • Must have completed a relevant level 2 pharmacy dispensing qualification (BTEC, NVQ or equivalent).
  • Certificate of completion of the PWDS Dispensing Accuracy Assessment NB: There should be no more than three attempts at any one time in completing the dispensing accuracy logs. If unsuccessful on the third attempt, then a period of reflection and dispensing re-training should be completed (according to local SOPs and risk management strategies) before undertaking the dispensing accuracy assessment again.

 

If a trainee does not meet the above entry criteria please contact the training programme director to discuss possible options.

These options could be undertaking a GPhC approved level 2 qualification with a training provider or by completing the PWDS level 2 unit listed below:

Programme Description

The PWDS Final Accuracy checking Programme (FACP) is designed to:

  • Provide trainees with the skills and knowledge to confirm the dispensing accuracy of any prescription previously clinically screened by a pharmacist
  • Develop the trainee’s professional awareness of pharmacy practice and accountability.
  • Encourage the further development of effective communication skills
  • Develop a professional interaction between trainee, pharmacy support staff, pharmacy technicians, pharmacists, other health care professionals and patients
  • Support appropriate skill-mix within pharmacy departments

Application for the FACP

Step Two

Application for Practice Development Day (PDD)

Please only apply for a Practice Development Day (PDD) if you have received confirmation that you have been accepted onto the FACP programme. We recommend that you attend the PDD within the first 500 items of your evidence collection.

Step Three

Application for Local Exam Pack

You may apply for your local exam pack at any point during your evidence collection. A mock and live exam will be sent out to your educational supervisor. Once received the live exam should be undertaken within three weeks.

You should plan with your educational supervisor when it is most appropriate for you to request your exam pack.

Step Four

Application for Local Assessment Interview Pack

Once you have fully completed your evidence collection, your local exam and Units 1 to 6 of your e-portfolio have been signed off by your educational supervisor you can apply for your local assessment interview pack.
