Programme Introduction

This training programme is a competency-based framework designed specifically to meet the training and learning needs of pharmacy technicians working in specialist medicines information and advice roles.

This training programme replaces the UKMi Accredited Medicines Information Technician Training Scheme (AMITTS) and supports medicines information pharmacy technicians for their current and future roles. It is robust, accessible, relevant and quality assures and is endorsed by UKMi.

This programme supports pharmacy technicians to demonstrate the safe deployment of the knowledge, skills and behaviours required and provides the assurance needed for safe autonomous practice.

Entry Criteria

The following prerequisites must be met before application

The entry requirements have been designed to ensure that trainees have appropriate experience and suitability for the role.

Learners must meet the following criteria:

  1. Be registered with their professional regulatory body (where registration is a requirement), for example, in Great Britain registration is with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
  2. Have two years post qualification experience that is considered to be appropriate and relevant
  3. Have recommendation and support from the Senior Pharmacy Manager and Medicines Information Manager
  4. Have a regular role in Medicines Information and be permanently based in Medicines Information. (If working less than two and a half days a week in Medicines Information, it may be more difficult to obtain sufficient evidence for accreditation within the timescale)
  5. Have a named Educational Supervisor based within the learner’s trust/organisation who is an appropriately experienced specialist medicines information pharmacist or an AMITTS accredited medicines information pharmacy technician.
  6. Have SOPs in place supporting the medicines information role

Programme Features

The programme comprises of:

  • virtual induction to meet the training programme directors and other learners
  • Underpinning knowledge activities to support and develop practice
  • Work-based evidence collection and e-portfolio building
  • Attendance on the UKMi National Medicines Information Training Course (NMITC) which is held virtually
  • Virtual practice development sessions
  • Assessed enquiry types. Learners choose up to 5 enquiry types from the following: Adverse Drug Reactions, Availability of Medicines, Complementary Medicines*, Formulation of Medicines, Identification of Pharmaceuticals, Immunisation, Interactions, IV Administration, IV Compatibility, Medicines Access, Medicines Helpline for the Public, Pharmaceutical Stability, Renal Impairment, Syringe Driver, Transfer of Care
  • Summative assessment interview
  • Training provider e-portfolio assessment
  • Certification

 

*Please note: Complementary medicines enquiries must be submitted as two categories – Complementary Medicines and the other relevant category e.g. to answer complementary medicine interaction enquiries you must undertake ‘Complementary medicines’ AND ‘Interactions’.

Virtual Induction

The virtual induction consists of a series of tutorials which provide the theoretical aspects of the relevant medicines information activities. This programme has a rolling start date – virtual induction allows learners to apply and begin at any time that suits them.

Programme Description

Aims and Learning Outcomes

The aim of the programme is to prepare learners for a medicines information role by enabling learners to:

  • Develop professional awareness of pharmacy practice and accountability of the pharmacy technician’s role in medicines information
  • Describe the methods for reporting errors and near misses and the importance of risk minimisation in medicines information.
  • Understand the reasons for, and the importance of clear, comprehensive, and timely documentation.
  • Develop understanding of UKMI documentation requirements as defined by audit standards.
  • Describe standard search patterns specific to enquiry types, and understand their usefulness in effective answering of medicines information enquiries.
  • Understand the benefits and limitations of individual medicines information reference sources and enable learners to access relevant information from appropriate sources.
  • Understand how to answer enquiries to provide medicines advice using a patient-centred approach.
  • Develop skills of professional judgement.
  • Recognise barriers and ways to effectively communicate in the area of medicines information.
  • Outline the medicines information role.

These learning objectives must then be put into practice and evidenced through the learner’s e-portfolio.

Examples of the types of enquiry covered by the different enquiry categories offered are given below.

Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs)
  • Can a medicine cause a specific ADR?
  • Identifying the most likely cause of an ADR
  • How to manage an ADR in a patient
  • Supply problems
  • Managing shortages
  • Foreign medicines e.g. patient visiting or moved to UK
  • Interactions with conventional medicines
  • Adverse reactions
  • Cautions or contraindications
  • Therapeutic uses
  • Suitable formulation for swallowing difficulties
  • Suitable formulation for enteral feeding tubes
  • Covert administration
  • Suitable formulation for patient with allergy or intolerance
  • Suitable formulation for patient with fluid restriction
  • Identification of unknown dosage form e.g. TICTAC / found tablet / dosette box / unlabelled patient’s own medicine
  • Identification of a foreign medicine (from dosage form or from medicine name)
  • Routine immunisations, travel vaccinations, or high-risk group vaccinations
  • Timing of vaccine doses
  • Managing vaccination errors
  • Suitability of vaccines for patients with allergies or medical problems
  • Drug-drug interactions
  • Drug-food interactions
  • Drug-test interactions
  • Drug-disease interactions
  • How to administer a medicine intravenously e.g. bolus / infusion
  • What to dilute a medicine with for IV administration
  • What type of IV access can be used for the medicine
  • Whether multiple medicines can be administered simultaneously IV
  • Mixing via same bag / syringe / Y-site / Piggyback
  • Formulary enquiries
  • NHS blacklist, SLS or funding enquiries
  • Can specific professional groups prescribe items?
  • Handling any MOP enquiries in a professional manner. This may involve referring or signposting, answering simple enquiries, accessing care records to confirm dosing etc.
  • Temperature excursions e.g. fridge / freezer / high or low temperatures
  • Stability of medicines in compliance aids
  • How to store diluted products
  • What dose or frequency of medicine should be used in renal impairment
  • How should a medicine be administered in a patient with renal impairment
  • Is a medicine safe to use in renal impairment
  • Renal replacement therapies is excluded from this category
  • Checking compatibility of medicines in a syringe driver
  • Checking diluents and strengths of medicines in a syringe driver
  • Checking whether medicines are suitable to be administered by a syringe driver
  • Enquiries relating to recent or current hospital admission, where patient’s care has transferred setting e.g. discharge home, step down from ITU etc.

Step Two

Application for the Medicines Information and Advice Virtual Induction

Please only apply for online induction if you have received confirmation that you have been accepted onto the Medicines Information and Advice Training Programme (MIATP). The online induction will enable learners to attend the day remotely via virtual classroom. Details of how to access the event will be sent out to you once your application has been processed.

Step Three

Medicines Information and Advice Training Programme Virtual Drop in Sessions

We provide virtual drop-in sessions on a regular basis to ensure you have consistent access to support. These sessions are non-compulsory, but they are an excellent resource for clarifying your understanding of the programme and connecting with the learner community. You are welcome to attend any number of sessions that fit your needs.

Step Four

Application to attend assessment interview

Once you have completed your evidence collection, you will need to apply for your assessment interview. Please apply for your chosen date. You will receive an acceptance email with further instructions. Further details regarding the virtual assessment day (including the link to access the event) will be provided by email approximately 3 weeks prior to the event.
